We know so many of these names of Black Americans killed by police, and we recognize that there are far too many others that we will never know. In honor of their lives, and in honor of those working to dismantle the system that perpetuates violence against Black Americans, our team at Maslouhi has been looking for ways to support the Black Lives Matter movement.
Maslouhi is a business intentionally designed to minimize the exploitation of Moroccan artisans; each of the artisans we employ receive a monthly salary and benefits for their work, rather than having them rely on the middleman-driven tourist markets of Marrakech. With over 8 years of experience working with artisans in Tameslouht (+ Mustapha's lifetime living there), we intimately understand that for real change to happen, support must be given to those who are doing the on-the-ground work in their communities.
We are thrilled to announce our new Limited Collection of handmade market baskets featuring a Black Lives Matter design that will financially support organizations that are doing incredible work in our communities stateside. 100% of the profits generated by the sales of these baskets will be donated to the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement in Athens, Georgia, USA and the S.H.A.R.P Foundation in Benton Harbor, Michigan, USA.
Why were these organizations chosen? Great question!
As many of you know, our team spans the globe. Maslouhi's team of master artisans lives and works in Tameslouht, Morocco; Co-Founders Sarah and Mustapha reside in Athens, GA; and Business Operation Managers Monica and Anteus are momentarily in St. Joseph, MI, where they re-located from Morocco due to COVID-19. Our team members identified two organizations actively fight racism and discrimination through advocacy, activism, and education in their respective communities:
We acknowledge that racism and discrimination exists in many countries, including Morocco, and work needs to be done in those communities as well. At this moment, we are intentionally focusing on our home communities, and look forward to expanding our efforts in the future.
Let's take a closer look at our Limited Collection Black Lives Matter market baskets!
Maslouhi's Moroccan market baskets are one of our most well-known and recognizable products. Featuring different styles with catchy phrases in both in Arabic and English, Maslouhi's Moroccan market baskets have become a definite customer favorite and a festival staple. Our baskets have been known to go around the world and are great for a day at the beach, shopping at your local farmers market, storing kids' toys, or for a picnic in the park! They are extremely durable and stylish, which makes them perfect for every occasion and a perfect gift.
Our Limited Collection Black Lives Matter baskets are handmade by Maslouhi's artisans in Tameslouht, Morocco. The body of the basket is made with natural woven reeds or “raffia”. Each basket has brown leather handles and handwoven letters made of black yarn. The baskets are around 12" high, 18" wide (at the widest point) with 9" handles.
We have designed two styles for you to choose from:
OK, I'm in! How do I purchase one?
We are currently taking pre-orders for these handmade baskets, online through June 25th on our website - www.lamaisonmaslouhi.com. After the pre-order period closes, Maslouhi artisans will hand-make each order in Tameslouht, Morocco and ship all of the basket orders together to Athens, GA, USA. Each order will then be shipped and fulfilled individually from Georgia. We anticipate this entire process will take around 1 month, with an estimated delivery date of mid-July 2020.
Customers living in Athens, GA can opt for a porch drop-off option and have their basket hand-delivered by the Maslouhi team. By selecting this option, the cost of domestic shipping will be donated to the aforementioned organizations.
I don't live in the United States! Can I still order a basket?
Absolutely! Customers in Morocco and Europe are welcome to order baskets. Your orders will be shipped separately, and will likely arrive in early July 2020. Additionally, because shipping is less expensive, your donation amount will be increased.
I love the baskets, but it's not in my budget right now. How can I support this important work?
One of the easiest ways to support us is to spread the word! Following us on social media (Facebook and Instagram), engaging with our posts, and sharing Maslouhi with your friends and family ensures that people know where to turn when they want ethically-sourced Moroccan home decor and accessories. Make sure you've signed up for our newsletter so that you're kept up-to-date on our new products, events (fingers-crossed!), and more.
